When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it’ll never end. But however hard you try you can’t run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever for one moment, accepts it. Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today. Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call… everybody lives.

- Well, you say that as if it’s a bad thing. But honestly, it’s the best thing there is.

#i do appreciate this growth arc though. ten never wanted - never could - leave any of the people he invited on board. in a way he wasn’t emotionally mature or strong enough. of course he let every one of them go in the end when it became clear that staying in the TARDIS with him was no longer an option… but never willingly. oh-so-human ten NEEDED them. and it’s not that eleven doesn’t need amy… but he understands now the cost of not letting her go. he has seen rose disappear into another world. he has left martha a family shattered by the memories they have of a world he broke in the first place. and he had to effectively kill his best friend - donna and her fighting spirit and the light of adventure in her eyes and her memories of their time together. he kept amy with him through so much. he got stuck into her and rory’s lives but finally - finally he realises that he has to STOP. that he has to let her grow up. to let her be safe. and as much as eleven makes this about amy growing up… it’s about eleven growing up too. he has played at being the raggedy doctor and amy’s hero long enough. for the first time in a long long time he chooses to say goodbye. ugh all the feelings in every universe there is.
